December 2003

Howdy Folks,

Happy Holidays

As the fall semester draws to a close, I reflect upon a truly interesting 2003. I have been able to see many of my friends and family, visit some beautiful parts of North America, and meet a multitude of fascinating activists while working for the Matt Gonzalez for Mayor campaign. Although we came up short on election day, we were able to mobilize a vast array of San Franciscans in a show of unity, with a better San Francisco as our common goal. I am honored to have assisted in this most altruistic endeavor. Please visit the PHOTO page for some pictures of the campaign as well as our travels to Cabo San Lucas for Thanksgiving.

As for Cabo, good luck to Bruce and Nicole, and best wishes to all the family and friends I had the pleasure of meeting. I look forward to catching up with my hometown buddies as I make a jaunt to Minnesota for Christmas and on to Forest City, Pennsylvania for the New Year, and after that I leave for Dangriga, Belize, on a Peace & Social Justice Mission with the Garifuna. If you would like to support our mission, please send your tax-deductible donation (Tax-Exempt Code # 941156628) to:

As always, comments are welcome.
Peace,
Paul

Drink of the moment
The Green Express

~ One large glass
~ 3/4 of Czech Absinth -Strong
~ 1/4 of Sebor Absinth
~ 1/4 water (optional)

Prepare the above ingregients, use your special Absinth spoon, place a cube of sugar on it, pour some booze over it, flame it, mix into drink, repeat with same cube. Add some ice. A bit 'o pot really helps to enhance the effect after 2 glasses.

WARNING
May be habit forming

Overall, a wonderful cocktail. Wonderful dreams. Creative ideas come (and go). Just don't cut your ear off.

This Month's Recipe:
Deep-Fried Twinkies
Some of you have been complaining that I only have vegan or vegetarian recipes on my website, so from Cholesterol's heart I stab at thee. By the way, they taste pretty damn good.

Ingredients
6 Twinkies
Popsicle sticks
4 cups vegetable oil
Flour for dusting
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 Tablespoon oil
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions
1. Chill or freeze Twinkies for several hours or overnight.
2. Heat 4 cups vegetable oil in deep fryer to about 375 degrees.
3. Mix together milk, vinegar and oil.
4. In another bowl, blend flour, baking powder and salt.
5. Whisk wet ingredients into dry and continue mixing until smooth. Refrigerate while oil heats.
6. Push stick into Twinkie lengthwise, leaving about 2 inches to use as a handle, dust with flour and dip into the batter. Rotate Twinkie until batter covers entire cake.
7. Place carefully in hot oil. The Twinkie will float, so hold it under with a utensil to ensure even browning. It should turn golden in 3 to 4 minutes. Depending on the size of your deep fryer, you might be able to fry only one at a time, two at the most.
8. Remove Twinkie to paper towel and let drain. Remove stick and allow Twinkie to sit for about 5 minutes before serving.

Makes 6.

Berry Sauce
1 10-ounce jar of seedless raspberry preserves
1 cup fresh or frozen mixed berries

Directions
1. In a saucepan, heat preserves over low heat until melted.
2. Add 1 cup of fresh or frozen mixed berries.
3. Heat until sauce just simmers.
4. Cover; refrigerate until served.

Makes 1 1/2 cups
